From Academic Research to Commercial Medical Technology

Medical Technology & Innovations, Inc. (MTI) was founded by Jeremy P. Feakins to commercialize pioneering academic research into the early detection of serious vision disorders in infants, preverbal children and other patients who could not reliably participate in conventional vision screening.

The underlying research was developed by Dr. Howard Freedman, whose work demonstrated the potential of photographic screening techniques to identify abnormalities that might otherwise remain undetected during the critical early years of visual development.

Jeremy recognized that the research had the potential to become a practical medical screening technology and established MTI to take the concept from the academic environment into commercial use.

Developing the PhotoScreener

MTI developed the research into the PhotoScreener, a microprocessor-based medical device designed to help identify children at risk of serious eye disorders before those conditions could cause permanent visual impairment.

Bringing the technology to market required considerably more than developing the original concept. MTI transformed the research into a manufacturable finished product, developed the necessary electronics, software and operating systems, completed product development and testing, navigated the regulatory process, established manufacturing and distribution capabilities, and introduced the finished device to the healthcare market.

The PhotoScreener ultimately received FDA clearance and was distributed as a commercial medical device.

Financing the Company and Going Public

As MTI developed, Jeremy was responsible for building the company and securing the capital required to move the technology from research through product development and commercialization.

In 1996, he led MTI through a transaction that made the company publicly traded in the United States.

Becoming a public company provided MTI with access to the capital markets as the business moved from product development into commercialization and gave Jeremy first-hand experience in virtually every aspect of building and financing an emerging public company—from private capital formation and securities transactions to investor relations, corporate governance and the continuing responsibilities of managing a publicly traded business.

Strategic Sale of the Technology

Following commercialization of the PhotoScreener, the technology rights were ultimately sold to a major international eyewear company, completing the journey from academic research to a developed, regulated and commercially distributed medical technology.

For Jeremy, the MTI experience became an important foundation for the work he has undertaken during the decades since.

It demonstrated the entire entrepreneurial cycle:

Identify promising technology. Develop the commercial opportunity. Build the company. Raise the capital. Navigate regulation. Bring the product to market. Access the public markets. Create strategic value. Complete the transaction.

That experience continues to shape JPF Venture Group's approach today: helping entrepreneurs and management teams think beyond the immediate financing requirement and focus instead on building companies capable of creating lasting enterprise value.
